How to get a Wyoming LPC license: NCE, NCMHCE and CRC exam, 3,000 supervised hours, the endorsement route, and where Wyoming stands on the Counseling Compact.

Concierge support for the Wyoming application — start to issued license.

Wyoming licenses independent clinical counselors as the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), through the Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board. Wyoming issues Counseling Compact privileges to practice (since August 31, 2026). Below: what Wyoming asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Wyoming LPC License Requirements

The independent clinical license in Wyoming is the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).

Exams named for licensure: NCE, NCMHCE and CRC exam. Rule 11-5 accepts the NCE, NCMHCE or the CRCC certification exam (or another exam the board approves); the passing score must fall within the five years before the application, except on the reciprocity or provisional route.

3,000 hours of post-degree supervised experience for the independent license.

Those hours are completed under the associate credential, the PPC (Provisional Professional Counselor).

Licensed elsewhere: License by reciprocity (Rule 11-6): a master's or higher in counseling, a passing score on an accepted exam, and a license in good standing in another state. Every license held in the last five years must be free of discipline.

Where Wyoming Applications Get Delayed

The 3,000 supervised hours (at least 1,200 direct client contact and 100 hours of clinical supervision) must be earned after the graduate degree and over no less than 18 and no more than 36 months (Rule 11-4).

Wyoming became the eighth state to issue Counseling Compact privileges, starting 2026-08-31; the privilege costs $250 plus the $30 compact fee, and no jurisprudence requirement is listed for it.

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Counseling Compact and Wyoming

Wyoming is a Counseling Compact member and is issuing privileges to practice as of August 31, 2026. A counselor who lives in another live member state and holds an unencumbered independent license there can apply through CompactConnect for a Wyoming privilege instead of a full Wyoming license. The privilege costs the Commission's $30 fee plus Wyoming's own $250, and it follows your home license: if that lapses, so does the privilege.

Addiction counselors in Wyoming

Wyoming credentials addiction counselors as LAT, CAP and CAPA, through the Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board. That credential is separate from the LPC, and the Counseling Compact does not cover it. Licensed Addictions Therapist, Certified Addictions Practitioner and Certified Addictions Practitioner Assistant are issued by the same board (rules Chapters 3, 4 and 8); a Provisional Addictions Therapist license also exists. LAT, CAP and CAPA holders need at least 15 addiction-specific CE hours per renewal.

Keeping it current

Wyoming renews the LPC every 2 years, with 45 hours of continuing education per cycle. Licenses expire every two years on the holder's birthday. At least 3 hours must be ethics and 3 hours suicide assessment or intervention (Rule 14-4). If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
