How to Get Your Wisconsin LPC License

How to get a Wisconsin LPC license: NCE, NCMHCE and CRC exam, 3,000 supervised hours, the endorsement route, and where Wisconsin stands on the Counseling Compact.

Concierge support for the Wisconsin application — start to issued license.

Wisconsin licenses independent clinical counselors as the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), through the Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling, and Social Work Examining Board, Professional Counselor Section (Department of Safety and Professional Services). Wisconsin has enacted the Counseling Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Below: what Wisconsin asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Wisconsin LPC License Requirements

The independent clinical license in Wisconsin is the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).

Exams named for licensure: NCE, NCMHCE and CRC exam. Any of the three national exams, or another exam the section approves (MPSW 11.01(4)). Reciprocity applicants must also pass the Wisconsin statutes and rules exam.

3,000 hours of post-degree supervised experience for the independent license.

Those hours are completed under the associate credential, the Training license (Professional Counselor Training License).

Licensed elsewhere: A reciprocal license goes to a counselor with a current license in good standing in another state whose requirements are substantially equivalent to Wisconsin's, who also passes the Wisconsin statutes and rules exam (MPSW 11.04). The rule sets no minimum years.

Where Wisconsin Applications Get Delayed

Post-master's hours (3,000, at least 1,000 face to face) must be earned while holding a professional counselor training license, at about one hour of supervision a week; hours from another state count without the training license if they meet the rule.

The statutes and rules exam is required for reciprocity, not for initial licensure by exam.

Washington treats Wisconsin licenses as not substantially equivalent, which matters to anyone planning a later move there.

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Counseling Compact and Wisconsin

Wisconsin has enacted the Counseling Compact, but it is not issuing or accepting privileges yet. Each member state has to finish its own setup, including FBI fingerprint authority, before it goes live. Until it does, practicing in Wisconsin takes a full Wisconsin license, and holding a Wisconsin license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.

Addiction counselors in Wisconsin

Wisconsin credentials addiction counselors as SAC, CSAC and SAC-IT, through the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. That credential is separate from the LPC, and the Counseling Compact does not cover it. Substance Abuse Counselor, Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor and SAC-in-Training are DSPS certificates (Wis. Admin. Code SPS 160).

Keeping it current

Wisconsin renews the LPC every 2 years, with 30 hours of continuing education per cycle. At least 4 of the 30 hours in professional ethics and boundaries (MPSW 19). If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
