How to Get Your Oklahoma LPC License

How to get an Oklahoma LPC license: NCE and OLERE, 3,000 supervised hours, the endorsement route, and where Oklahoma stands on the Counseling Compact.

Concierge support for the Oklahoma application — start to issued license.

Oklahoma licenses independent clinical counselors as the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), through the Oklahoma State Board of Behavioral Health Licensure. Oklahoma issues Counseling Compact privileges to practice (since October 1, 2026). Below: what Oklahoma asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Oklahoma LPC License Requirements

The independent clinical license in Oklahoma is the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).

Exams named for licensure: NCE and OLERE. Applicants take the NCE (or another exam the board deems equivalent) and the Oklahoma Legal and Ethical Responsibilities Examination.

3,000 hours of post-degree supervised experience for the independent license.

Those hours are completed under the associate credential, the LPC Candidate (Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate).

Oklahoma requires a state law or jurisprudence exam.

Licensed elsewhere: Counselors with an active, unrestricted out-of-state license that permits independent practice can be licensed by endorsement after passing the Oklahoma Legal and Ethical Responsibilities Examination. A master's in counseling or a mental health field is required.

Where Oklahoma Applications Get Delayed

Oklahoma began accepting and issuing Compact privileges on 2026-10-01; its own state fee is $0, so a privilege costs only the $30 Compact fee.

The 3,000 hours (or 3 years) must include 1,000 direct client hours and 100 hours of supervision, with at least 45 minutes of supervision every week, completed within 60 months.

Oklahoma requires its jurisprudence exam for Compact privileges as well as for licensure.

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Counseling Compact and Oklahoma

Oklahoma is a Counseling Compact member and is issuing privileges to practice as of October 1, 2026. A counselor who lives in another live member state and holds an unencumbered independent license there can apply through CompactConnect for an Oklahoma privilege instead of a full Oklahoma license. The privilege costs the Commission's $30 fee plus Oklahoma's own fee, and it follows your home license: if that lapses, so does the privilege.

Addiction counselors in Oklahoma

Oklahoma credentials addiction counselors as LADC, through the Oklahoma Board of Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors. That credential is separate from the LPC, and the Counseling Compact does not cover it. Addiction counselors are licensed by a separate board, not the Behavioral Health Licensure board.

Keeping it current

Oklahoma renews the LPC every 2 years, with 40 hours of continuing education per cycle. 20 clock hours per year, at least 3 in counseling ethics; approved supervisors need 3 hours in supervision. If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
