Nevada licenses independent clinical counselors as the CPC (Clinical Professional Counselor), through the Nevada Board of Examiners for Marriage and Family Therapists and Clinical Professional Counselors. Nevada has enacted the Counseling Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Below: what Nevada asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.
Nevada CPC License Requirements
The independent clinical license in Nevada is the CPC (Clinical Professional Counselor).
Exams named for licensure: NCMHCE. The NCMHCE is the only exam named in NRS 641A.231; the NCE does not qualify.
3,000 hours of post-degree supervised experience for the independent license.
Those hours are completed under the associate credential, the CPC-Intern (Clinical Professional Counselor Intern).
Licensed elsewhere: A counselor with a valid, unrestricted clinical professional counselor license in another state, DC or a territory, with no discipline, investigation or malpractice liability, can apply for licensure by endorsement (NRS 641A.241). The board must act within 45 days of receiving a complete file.

Nevada accepts the NCMHCE only. A counselor who passed only the NCE will need to sit for the NCMHCE before Nevada will license them.
Nevada requires at least 2 years of postgraduate experience and 3,000 supervised hours, with at least 1,500 hours of direct client contact (NRS 641A.231). The board page asks for 300 hours of supervision, at least 1 hour in every week counseled; the statute sets a 100-hour floor.
The Counseling Compact law (AB 163) took effect 2026-01-01; Nevada was not yet issuing privileges as of 2026-10-08.
Background checks for reciprocity applicants take about 8 weeks, per the board.
Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Counseling Compact and Nevada
Nevada has enacted the Counseling Compact (June 10, 2025), but it is not issuing or accepting privileges yet. Each member state has to finish its own setup, including FBI fingerprint authority, before it goes live. Until it does, practicing in Nevada takes a full Nevada license, and holding a Nevada license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.
Keeping it current
Nevada renews the CPC every 2 years, with 40 hours of continuing education per cycle. Licenses expire January 1 of even-numbered years; renewal fee $450. CE must include 6 hours of ethics, 4 of suicide prevention, and cultural competency/DEI (the board page says 6 hours, NAC 641A.131 says 4). At least half must be live or interactive. If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
