How to Get Your Nebraska LIMHP License

How to get a Nebraska LIMHP license: NCE, NCMHCE and CRC exam, the endorsement route, and where Nebraska stands on the Counseling Compact.

Concierge support for the Nebraska application — start to issued license.

Nebraska licenses independent clinical counselors as the LIMHP (Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner), through the Nebraska Board of Mental Health Practice, Department of Health and Human Services Licensure Unit. Nebraska has enacted the Counseling Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Below: what Nebraska asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Nebraska LIMHP License Requirements

The independent clinical license in Nebraska is the LIMHP (Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner).

Nebraska also issues the LMHP (non-independent tier; required before (or with a passed exam as a PLMHP alongside) the LIMHP) and the CPC (a certification for counselors (3,000 post-master's hours plus the NCE or CRC exam), held with an LMHP or LIMHP), so confirm which tier your work and your payers require.

Exams named for licensure: NCE, NCMHCE and CRC exam. For counselors, 172 NAC 94-010 accepts the NCE, NCMHCE, CRC exam, EPPP or a board-approved equivalent for the LMHP/LIMHP. The CPC certification takes the NCE or CRC exam.

Those hours are completed under the associate credential, the PLMHP (Provisional Mental Health Practitioner).

Licensed elsewhere: Nebraska licenses by reciprocity if the other state's requirements are substantially equivalent, or after at least 5 years of active practice following licensure elsewhere plus the Nebraska jurisprudence exam (75% to pass) (Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-2125; 172 NAC 94-006).

Where Nebraska Applications Get Delayed

The independent tier is the LIMHP, not an LPC. An LIMHP needs 3,000 supervised hours, half with clients who have a major mental illness or disorder, on top of LMHP or PLMHP-plus-exam status (38-2124). Graduates of non-accredited programs need 7,000 hours over at least 10 years.

The LMHP requires 3,000 post-degree supervised hours, 1,500 of them direct client contact, with at least 1 hour a week of face-to-face supervision (38-2122). A provisional license expires after 5 years.

LIMHP-track supervision runs at 2 hours face-to-face per 15 hours with major-disorder clients, never more than 45 hours unsupervised (172 NAC 94-009).

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Counseling Compact and Nebraska

Nebraska has enacted the Counseling Compact (April 19, 2022), but it is not issuing or accepting privileges yet. Each member state has to finish its own setup, including FBI fingerprint authority, before it goes live. Until it does, practicing in Nebraska takes a full Nebraska license, and holding a Nebraska license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.

Addiction counselors in Nebraska

Nebraska credentials addiction counselors as LADC and PLADC. That credential is separate from the LIMHP, and the Counseling Compact does not cover it. Licensed under the separate Alcohol and Drug Counseling Practice Act (Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-301 to 38-321), through the same DHHS licensure unit.

Keeping it current

Nebraska renews the LIMHP every 2 years, with 32 hours of continuing education per cycle. All licenses expire September 1 of even-numbered years. 32 hours in the prior 24 months, including 4 of ethics; LIMHPs also need 6 hours on diagnosis and treatment (172 NAC 94-012). If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
