How to Get Your Missouri LPC License

How to get a Missouri LPC license: NCE, 3,000 supervised hours, the endorsement route, and where Missouri stands on the Counseling Compact.

Concierge support for the Missouri application — start to issued license.

Missouri licenses independent clinical counselors as the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), through the Missouri Committee for Professional Counselors (Division of Professional Registration). Missouri has enacted the Counseling Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Below: what Missouri asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Missouri LPC License Requirements

The independent clinical license in Missouri is the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).

Exams named for licensure: NCE. Applicants also pass the Missouri jurisprudence exam, an open-book online test through MyNBCE that cannot be waived.

3,000 hours of post-degree supervised experience for the independent license.

Those hours are completed under the associate credential, the PLPC (Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor).

Missouri requires a state law or jurisprudence exam.

Licensed elsewhere: Under RSMo 337.510.3, a counselor licensed for at least one year elsewhere applies with proof of licensure. The committee waives Missouri's exam, education and experience requirements if the other state had minimum requirements and verifies you met them; it may still require the state law exam.

Where Missouri Applications Get Delayed

The endorsement route expects 1 year of licensure elsewhere. Count from the date your independent license was issued, not your associate license.

Supervised experience is 3,000 hours and 24 months, finished within five years, with 1,200 direct client hours and an hour of face-to-face supervision each week.

The board's compact page still says privilege applications were "expected to open in 2025"; Missouri was not issuing privileges as of 2026-10-08.

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

Renewing Your Missouri LPC License

CE Requirement

40 CE hours per renewal cycle

The Counseling Compact and Missouri

Missouri has enacted the Counseling Compact (July 6, 2023), but it is not issuing or accepting privileges yet. Each member state has to finish its own setup, including FBI fingerprint authority, before it goes live. Until it does, practicing in Missouri takes a full Missouri license, and holding a Missouri license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.

Addiction counselors in Missouri

Missouri credentials addiction counselors as CRADC, CRAADC and CCJP, through the Missouri Credentialing Board (IC&RC member board). That credential is separate from the LPC, and the Counseling Compact does not cover it. These are IC&RC certifications, not state licenses.

Keeping it current

Missouri renews the LPC on its own cycle, with 40 hours of continuing education per cycle. At least 20 of the 40 hours must be formal, including 2 hours of suicide assessment, referral, treatment and management training. If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
