Mississippi licenses independent clinical counselors as the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), through the Mississippi State Board of Examiners for Licensed Professional Counselors. Mississippi has enacted the Counseling Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Below: what Mississippi asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.
Mississippi LPC License Requirements
The independent clinical license in Mississippi is the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).
Mississippi also issues the LPC-S (supervisor designation; all post-master's hours must be supervised by an LPC-S), so confirm which tier your work and your payers require.
Exams named for licensure: NCE and NCMHCE. Either exam, taken without prior board approval. The Mississippi Jurisprudence Exam is required for the provisional license.
3,000 hours of post-degree supervised experience for the independent license.
Those hours are completed under the associate credential, the P-LPC (Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor).
Mississippi requires a state law or jurisprudence exam.
Licensed elsewhere: Mississippi has no reciprocity agreements. Licensure by comity is for counselors who have held an equivalent independent license continuously for at least five years with no substantiated complaints; others apply under the standard rules or the Universal Recognition of Occupational Licenses Act.

The endorsement route expects 5 years of licensure elsewhere. Count from the date your independent license was issued, not your associate license.
The 3,000 hours take at least 18 months, with at least 1,200 direct service hours and 100 hours of individual supervision; no more than 40 hours a week and 25 direct hours a week count.
Counselors providing distance services to Mississippi clients must hold a Mississippi license and the NBCC Board Certified-TeleMental Health (BC-TMH) credential or its equivalent.
Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Counseling Compact and Mississippi
Mississippi has enacted the Counseling Compact (March 16, 2022), but it is not issuing or accepting privileges yet. Each member state has to finish its own setup, including FBI fingerprint authority, before it goes live. Until it does, practicing in Mississippi takes a full Mississippi license, and holding a Mississippi license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.
Addiction counselors in Mississippi
Mississippi credentials addiction counselors as CADC, CAADC, CCS and CCJP, through the Mississippi Association of Addiction Professionals (IC&RC member board). That credential is separate from the LPC, and the Counseling Compact does not cover it. These are IC&RC certifications, not state licenses.
Keeping it current
Mississippi renews the LPC every 2 years, with 24 hours of continuing education per cycle. LPCs renew by June 30 every two years; 6 of the 24 hours must cover ethics or legal issues. Provisional licenses renew yearly. If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
