Michigan licenses independent clinical counselors as the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), through the Michigan Board of Counseling (LARA, Bureau of Professional Licensing). Counseling Compact legislation has been introduced in Michigan but not enacted. Below: what Michigan asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.
Michigan LPC License Requirements
The independent clinical license in Michigan is the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).
Exams named for licensure: NCE, NCMHCE and CRC. Michigan accepts any one of the three.
3,000 hours of post-degree supervised experience for the independent license.
Those hours are completed under the associate credential, the LLPC (Limited Licensed Professional Counselor).
Licensed elsewhere: Endorsement requires a current full license from another state or Canadian province, a qualifying degree and a passed NCE, NCMHCE or CRC exam. If you have held a full license in good standing for the last five years, you are presumed to meet the degree and exam requirements.

The endorsement route expects 5 years of licensure elsewhere. Count from the date your independent license was issued, not your associate license.
Supervised hours count only after the limited license (LLPC) is issued: 3,000 hours over at least two years with 100 hours of supervision, in person or by live video.
Every applicant completes one-time training on identifying victims of human trafficking.
Michigan is not a compact member; HB 4591 (2025) is the pending compact bill.
Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.
Renewing Your Michigan LPC License
Renewal Cycle
Every 3 years
The Counseling Compact and Michigan
Michigan is not a Counseling Compact member. A bill to join has been introduced, but nothing changes for licensure until it is enacted and the state then finishes its implementation, which in other states has taken a year or more. Plan on a full Michigan license.
Addiction counselors in Michigan
Michigan credentials addiction counselors as CADC, CAADC and CCS, through the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (IC&RC member board). That credential is separate from the LPC, and the Counseling Compact does not cover it. These are certifications, not state licenses.
Keeping it current
Michigan renews the LPC every 3 years. Full licenses renew on a three-year cycle. The limited license renews yearly for no more than 10 years. If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
