Louisiana licenses independent clinical counselors as the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), through the Louisiana Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners. Louisiana issues Counseling Compact privileges to practice (since April 20, 2026). Below: what Louisiana asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.
Louisiana LPC License Requirements
The independent clinical license in Louisiana is the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).
Exams named for licensure: NCE and NCMHCE. The board may also require an oral exam.
3,000 hours of post-degree supervised experience for the independent license.
Those hours are completed under the associate credential, the PLPC (Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor).
Licensed elsewhere: An LPC who has actively practiced for at least one year in another jurisdiction is licensed by endorsement with a passed NCE or NCMHCE (or the board's oral exam), 40 CE hours in the prior two years and clean standing everywhere. With less than a year, your state's requirements must be substantially equivalent to Louisiana's.

The endorsement route expects 1 year of licensure elsewhere. Count from the date your independent license was issued, not your associate license.
The 3,000 supervised hours span two to six years and include at least 1,900 direct counseling hours under a board-approved LPC Supervisor.
Out-of-state applicants pay more: $300 for the LPC application, license and seal versus $200 in state.
Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Counseling Compact and Louisiana
Louisiana is a Counseling Compact member and is issuing privileges to practice as of April 20, 2026. A counselor who lives in another live member state and holds an unencumbered independent license there can apply through CompactConnect for a Louisiana privilege instead of a full Louisiana license. The privilege costs the Commission's $30 fee plus Louisiana's own $130, and it follows your home license: if that lapses, so does the privilege.
Addiction counselors in Louisiana
Louisiana credentials addiction counselors as ADC, AADC, CCS and CCJP, through the Louisiana Association of Substance Abuse Counselors & Trainers (IC&RC member board). That credential is separate from the LPC, and the Counseling Compact does not cover it. These are IC&RC certifications; state addiction counselor licensing in Louisiana was not reviewed here.
Keeping it current
Louisiana renews the LPC every 2 years, with 40 hours of continuing education per cycle. Renewal is every two years in June. The 40 hours include 3 in ethics and 6 in diagnosis. If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
