Kansas licenses independent clinical counselors as the LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor), through the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board. Kansas has enacted the Counseling Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Below: what Kansas asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.
Kansas LCPC License Requirements
The independent clinical license in Kansas is the LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor).
Kansas also issues the LPC (lower tier; the LCPC adds diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders), so confirm which tier your work and your payers require.
3,000 hours of post-degree supervised experience for the independent license.
Licensed elsewhere: Under K.S.A. 65-5807 you qualify if your state's standards are substantially equivalent, or if you have held a license with a similar scope for the 12 months right before applying, have no serious discipline and hold at least a master's in counseling or a related field. LCPC applicants also show clinical competence through two of: graduate coursework or a national clinical exam, three years of clinical practice, or an attestation from an independent clinician.

The endorsement route expects 1 year of licensure elsewhere. Count from the date your independent license was issued, not your associate license.
The LCPC's 3,000 postgraduate hours include 1,500 direct client hours, with one hour of supervision per 15 client hours and at least 50 hours of individual supervision.
Kansas has one of the shortest years-licensed routes: 12 months of licensure elsewhere can qualify you.
Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Counseling Compact and Kansas
Kansas has enacted the Counseling Compact (April 10, 2023), but it is not issuing or accepting privileges yet. Each member state has to finish its own setup, including FBI fingerprint authority, before it goes live. Until it does, practicing in Kansas takes a full Kansas license, and holding a Kansas license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.
Addiction counselors in Kansas
Kansas credentials addiction counselors as Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselor, Licensed Master's Addiction Counselor and Licensed Addiction Counselor, through the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board. That credential is separate from the LCPC, and the Counseling Compact does not cover it. The same board licenses addiction counselors at three levels (K.A.R. 102-7).
Keeping it current
Kansas renews the LCPC every 2 years, with 30 hours of continuing education per cycle. Each two-year period includes 3 hours of professional ethics and 6 hours on diagnosing and treating mental disorders. If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
