Georgia licenses independent clinical counselors as the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), through the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists. Georgia issues Counseling Compact privileges to practice (since June 2, 2026). Below: what Georgia asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.
Georgia LPC License Requirements
The independent clinical license in Georgia is the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).
Those hours are completed under the associate credential, the APC (Associate Professional Counselor).
Licensed elsewhere: The board may license without examination a counselor currently licensed in a state whose requirements are substantially equal to or greater than Georgia's. Your current state completes the board's license verification form, and endorsement files are reviewed case by case.

Georgia counts experience in years, not a single hour total: a master's-level applicant needs four years of post-master's directed experience under supervision, or three years plus a qualifying practicum or internship. For experience after 2018-09-30 a year means at least 1,000 hours, all earned within the 60 months before applying.
An LPC who supervises in Georgia must hold the NBCC Approved Clinical Supervisor credential or the LPCA of Georgia supervisor credential.
Georgia was the first state to enact the Counseling Compact.
Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Counseling Compact and Georgia
Georgia is a Counseling Compact member and is issuing privileges to practice as of June 2, 2026. A counselor who lives in another live member state and holds an unencumbered independent license there can apply through CompactConnect for a Georgia privilege instead of a full Georgia license. The privilege costs the Commission's $30 fee plus Georgia's own $100, and it follows your home license: if that lapses, so does the privilege.
Addiction counselors in Georgia
Georgia credentials addiction counselors as CADC-I, CADC-II, CAADC, CCS and CCJP, through the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Certification Board of Georgia (IC&RC member board). That credential is separate from the LPC, and the Counseling Compact does not cover it. These are IC&RC certifications, not state licenses.
Keeping it current
Georgia renews the LPC every 2 years, with 35 hours of continuing education per cycle. The cycle runs October 1 of each even year to September 30 two years later. At least 5 of the 35 hours are ethics, taken live (synchronous). CE is reported in CE Broker from 2026. If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
