How to Get Your Arizona LPC License

How to get an Arizona LPC license: NCE, NCMHCE and CRC, 3,200 supervised hours, the endorsement route, and where Arizona stands on the Counseling Compact.

Concierge support for the Arizona application — start to issued license.

Arizona licenses independent clinical counselors as the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), through the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners. Arizona issues Counseling Compact privileges to practice (since September 30, 2025). Below: what Arizona asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.

Arizona LPC License Requirements

The independent clinical license in Arizona is the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).

Exams named for licensure: NCE, NCMHCE and CRC. The board approves the NCE, the NCMHCE or the CRC exam. You must pass within 12 months of exam authorization, with no more than three attempts.

3,200 hours of post-degree supervised experience for the independent license.

Those hours are completed under the associate credential, the LAC (Licensed Associate Counselor).

Licensed elsewhere: Licensure by endorsement (A.R.S. 32-3274) requires a current, good-standing license at a substantially equivalent level held for at least one year, plus a master's or higher degree. Arizona residents can also use Universal Recognition (A.R.S. 32-4302).

Where Arizona Applications Get Delayed

At 3,200 hours, Arizona asks for more supervised experience than most states. Counselors licensed elsewhere on 3,000 hours should check whether endorsement waives the difference before assuming it does.

The endorsement route expects 1 year of licensure elsewhere. Count from the date your independent license was issued, not your associate license.

The 3,200 supervised hours span at least 24 months and include 1,600 hours of direct client contact (no more than 400 in psychoeducation) and 100 hours of clinical supervision.

Arizona requires its Statutes/Regulations Tutorial, not a scored jurisprudence exam, for compact privileges and at each renewal.

Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Counseling Compact and Arizona

Arizona is a Counseling Compact member and is issuing privileges to practice as of September 30, 2025. A counselor who lives in another live member state and holds an unencumbered independent license there can apply through CompactConnect for an Arizona privilege instead of a full Arizona license. The privilege costs the Commission's $30 fee plus Arizona's own $250, and it follows your home license: if that lapses, so does the privilege.

Addiction counselors in Arizona

Arizona credentials addiction counselors as Licensed Independent Addiction Counselor, Licensed Associate Addiction Counselor and Licensed Addiction Technician, through the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners. That credential is separate from the LPC, and the Counseling Compact does not cover it. Arizona licenses addiction technicians, associate addiction counselors and independent addiction counselors (A.R.S. 32-3321).

Keeping it current

Arizona renews the LPC every 2 years, with 30 hours of continuing education per cycle. Each period must include 3 hours in behavioral health ethics or mental health law, 3 hours in cultural competency, and the 3-hour Arizona Statutes/Regulations Tutorial. If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
