Alaska licenses independent clinical counselors as the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), through the Alaska Board of Professional Counselors (Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing). Alaska is not a Counseling Compact member. Below: what Alaska asks of a counselor already licensed in another state, and where those applications slow down.
Alaska LPC License Requirements
The independent clinical license in Alaska is the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).
Exams named for licensure: NCE and NCMHCE. The board also accepts another nationally recognized counselor exam it finds equivalent. A passing score expires if no license issues within three years.
3,000 hours of post-degree supervised experience for the independent license.
Licensed elsewhere: Licensure by credentials is open to a counselor licensed in another jurisdiction whose requirements the board finds substantially the same or higher. You submit that jurisdiction's licensure requirements, license verification and a full discipline history.

The 3,000 hours must include at least 1,000 hours of direct counseling and 100 hours of direct supervision over at least two years. A 2025-11-14 board statement reads the two years as a cumulative 24 months of supervised work.
The statute now refers to associate counselor licensure, but this run could not confirm how or when the associate license is issued.
Supervisor attestations and verifications from other boards take the longest. Request them the week you decide to apply, not the week you file.

The Counseling Compact and Alaska
Alaska is not a Counseling Compact member, so there is no privilege-to-practice route here. Practicing with clients located in Alaska takes an Alaska license, through endorsement where the state offers it or a full application where it does not.
Keeping it current
Alaska renews the LPC every 2 years, with 40 hours of continuing education per cycle. For periods beginning on or after 2023-11-01, the 40 hours include at least 3 in ethics, 3 in suicidality and 3 in cultural competency. First renewals are prorated. If you hold licenses in several states, each runs its own calendar and its own CE rules, which is most of what our annual compliance service tracks.
