Continuing Education When You Hold Counseling Licenses in Several States

Each state license carries its own CE hours, cycle and required topics. Compact privileges do not add any. How to build one CE plan that satisfies every board without taking the same ethics course four times.

Each state license has its own CE hours, cycle and required topics: California's LPCC needs 36 hours per renewal, Texas's LPC 24 with ethics and diversity minimums, New York's LMHC 36 every three years. Compact privileges add nothing, because the Commission requires CE only for your home state. Track every license in one grid.

One license means one CE requirement. Three licenses mean three requirements with three cycles, three sets of required topics and three ways of being audited. The total hours are rarely the problem. The overlap is.

How different are the requirements?

Three large states, each confirmed on the board's own pages, show the spread:

  • California LPCC: 36 hours each renewal period, including a 6-hour law and ethics course every period and a one-time 3-hour telehealth course. Certificates are not submitted, but the board audits at random.
  • Texas LPC: 24 hours each renewal period, including at least 6 in ethics and at least 3 in distinct populations and competency. Since January 1, 2024, at least half the hours must come from a provider listed in the board's rule. Texas also requires passing the jurisprudence exam each renewal, which counts for one ethics hour.
  • New York LMHC: 36 hours each three-year registration period, with no more than 12 hours of self-study in a 36-month period.

Those are three different cycles and three different rules about format and provider. A counselor holding all three can satisfy them with roughly the same coursework, but only if each course is approved for each state or comes from a provider each state accepts.

Do compact privileges add CE?

No. The Counseling Compact Commission's FAQ says practitioners only need to complete CE for their home state. A privilege expires with your home-state license and is renewed in CompactConnect after your home state renews you. So a counselor with a home license and four privileges has one CE requirement, not five. That is one of the quieter advantages of a privilege over a second full license.

The trade-off: you still have to know and follow each remote state's law while practicing there, and some remote states require a jurisprudence exam to get the privilege in the first place. See jurisprudence exams for counselors.

How do you build one plan for several states?

  1. Make a grid. One row per license: total hours, cycle dates, required topics (ethics, suicide prevention, cultural competence, supervision, state law), limits on self-study or online hours, and provider rules.
  2. Start with the strictest state's topic list. Courses chosen for the most specific requirement often satisfy the general ones elsewhere.
  3. Check provider acceptance before you register. A course approved by a national provider may count in one state and not another. Texas, for example, requires half its hours from listed providers.
  4. Watch state-specific law courses. A course on one state's law will rarely count as the law hours for another.
  5. Keep certificates in one folder, tagged by state. Audits ask for proof of specific hours in a specific cycle. A single folder with each certificate tagged to the licenses it counted for makes an audit a ten-minute job.

What about national certifications?

If you hold the NCC, a CRC, or an addiction credential, those carry their own CE rules too. CRCC, for example, requires 100 clock hours over each five-year CRC cycle. The same courses can often count toward a state license and a national credential, so add those rows to the grid.

Our Annual Renewal and CE Compliance service keeps this grid for you, flags gaps before each deadline, and includes compact privilege renewals. You still take the courses. We make sure the ones you take count everywhere they can.

Common questions

Do I need CE for each state where I have a compact privilege?
No. The Counseling Compact Commission says practitioners only need to complete CE for their home state. Your privileges expire with your home license and are renewed after your home state renews you.
Can one ethics course count for my Texas and California licenses?
Sometimes. It has to meet each state's provider and content rules. Texas requires at least half of its 24 hours from listed providers, and state-specific law courses generally count only in the state they cover.
How many CE hours does a New York LMHC need?
36 hours for each three-year registration period, with no more than 12 hours of self-study in any 36-month period, according to the New York Office of the Professions.
